Hockey: Defiel named BCHL Player of the Week

Stillwater’s Gordie Defiel was named the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) Player of the Week for the week ending on Nov. 23 after leading the Coquitlam Express to back-to-back victories over the Penticton Vees.

The former Ponies goaltender allowed just one goal in each game while making 24 and 28 saves to finish with a .95 goals-against average and .963 save percentage in the home-and-home series.

Defiel, 20, has played in 22 games for the Express (14-13-0) and posted a 10-12-0 record with a .372 goals against average and an .883 save percentage.

The Express, a Junior A team that has produced NHL players David Jones (Avalanche), Brandon Yip (Predators), Milan Lucic (Bruins), Andrew Ladd (Jets) and Kylie Turris (Senators).

Last year as a member of the Minnesota Wilderness, a junior team based out of Cloquet, Defiel was named the top goaltender in the Superior International Hockey League. He posted a gaudy 25-1-2 record and led the league in goals against average (1.39), save percentage (.945) and shutouts (8). He was also named the tournament MVP while leading the Wilderness to the Dudley Hewitt Cup title.
