Mary Knaak — Girls swimming and diving
A steady contributor for the Stillwater girls’ swimming and diving program the past several years, Mary Knaak closed out her prep career by helping the Ponies to a fourth-place finish at the Class AA state meet.
Knaak, one of just three seniors in Stillwater’s state lineup, placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:04.05) and 16th in the 200 freestyle race (1:57.21) at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Nov. 20. She also joined teammates Asia Neuman, Ava Howard and Kylie Burgess to close out the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay.
In addition finishing fourth at MSHSL state, Knaak and the Ponies (9-0 SEC, 11-0) won conference and section titles and placed second at True Team state.
Sierra Smith — Girls hockey
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team is off to a solid start behind a balanced offensive attack that is averaging more than five goals per game this season.
Junior forward Sierra Smith scored two goals and added two assists to help propel the Ponies to an 8-3 Suburban East Conference victory over Hastings on Friday night. Smith assisted on two goals scored by teammate Jane Vezina as the Ponies improved to 2-0 in league play. Smith also scored a goal in Stillwater’s 4-3 loss at highly regarded Edina on Nov. 16 and contributed a goal in the 5-0 season-opening victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton on Nov. 9.
The Ponies (3-1) host White Bear Lake in a conference game on Tuesday.
