OAK PARK HEIGHTS — After falling short in its previous two one-point matches this season, the Stillwater girls’ tennis team prevailed 4-3 over Centennial in Wednesday’s nonconference dual meet at Stillwater Area High School.
The Ponies (4-2 SEC, 8-3) swept four singles matches with relative ease — losing just six games combined in victories by Savannah Johnson, Aliza Deming, Shelby Anderson and Elizabeth Quinn — while the Cougars won all three doubles matches.
Johnson dispatched Claire Olson 6-1, 6-1 at first singles and Deming followed with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Leah Haiden at the second spot. Anderson and Quinn each lost just one game in victories over Abbey Teschendorf and Mari Zach at third and fourth singles.
Centennial needed three sets to prevail at second and third doubles. Meghan Longen and Kim Gromek outlasted Stillwater’s Emily Frenchik and Clara Ilkka 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (7-4), (10-6). Emily Johnson and Julia Hudgens also needed three sets to defeat Lexie Sherrick and Emma Germundson 3-6, 6-3, (10-8). Jenna Sherrick and Hannah Quinn dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Centennial’s Jenna Sundstrom and Jasmin Bretoi at first doubles.
n Hannah Glasrud and Olivia Anderson posted an 8-2 exhibition doubles victory for the Ponies.
