MAPLEWOOD — It took an impressive comeback at first doubles, but the Stillwater girls’ tennis team completed the sweep while defeating Mounds Park Academy 7-0 in Wednesday’s nonconference dual meet.
The Ponies (2-0 SEC, 5-1) had already wrapped up the team victory, but Jenna Sherrick and Hannah Quinn were trailing 5-0 in the third set of their match against Zoe Chambers and Abby Croonquist at first doubles. Sherrick and Quinn, however, rallied to win the final seven games to record a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 triumph.
“It was a nice team win against a good team,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “The final score wasn’t nearly indicative of how close many of the matches were. The match of the day was at first doubles.”
Stillwater received singles wins from Savannah Johnson, Shelby Anderson, Elizabeth Quinn and Emma Germundson and also prevailed at the other two doubles spots in two sets. Remi Larson and Amanda Williams pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory at second doubles while Emily Frenchik and Lexie Sherrick won 6-4, 6-3 at the third spot.
