Girls cross country: Ponies eighth in season opener

ROSEMOUNT — Junior Abby Lange finished 12th on Friday as the Stillwater girls’ cross country team placed eighth in the season-opening Rosemount Irish Invitational at Rosemount High School.

Fourth-ranked Eden Prairie scored 59 points to win by a comfortable margin over runner-up Edina (112) and third-place Prior Lake (131). The Ponies totaled 226 points to place in the middle of the 16-team field.

Lange covered the 3,200-meter course (the remainder of Stillwater’s races this season will be 4,000 meters) in a time of 12:06.7, which was more than 17 seconds behind individual medalist Hannah Jeter of Eden Prairie, which swept the top two places.

Haley Beech was next for the Ponies in 41st place with a time of 12:55.5 and Ari Krenz finished 50th at 13:03.5. Lauren Lampright (13:12.4) and Fiona Montie (13:33.4) placed 55th and 68th to complete the scoring.

Stillwater is scheduled to compete at the Faribault Invitational on Friday at North Alexander Park.

n The Ponies placed sixth in the 14-team JV race on Friday, led by Erin Thiets in 18th place with a time of 13:46.1.
