Shirley Neeson is one reason the Baubles and Bangles jewelry and bake sale has a sparkling reputation for bargain shoppers.

The 87 year-old Stillwater woman has volunteered at all 10 years of the sale; she sorts and marks jewelry that eventually funds the programs she loves. Throughout the years, Neeson has participated in many senior center programs and events, such as Friday Friends, Lunch Bunch and Wise Wonderful Women.

Senior volunteers like Neeson prepare for the sale in early June, sifting through donations that have filtered in during the year. Local churches and participating businesses like Lake Elmo Bank and Pony Preschool also display collection boxes. After the jewelry is sorted, Neeson puts the earrings and pins on cards, which usually number in the hundreds. Neeson said “seeing all the pretty jewelry” is one of the reasons she likes to volunteer, but also because “the people that come in to try on the jewelry have great tales to tell.”

The “Baubles and Bangles Used Jewelry and Bake Sale” is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Community Thread. A sneek peak with wine and appetizers is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today. Preview tickets are $25. The sale features classic to vintage to funky used jewelry, jewelry boxes, gently used purses, and homemade baked goods. Tables are restocked throughout the day, and all the proceeds benefit the ongoing programming of the Community Thread Senior centers.
