Lakeview earns top rating in magazine’s surgical guide

Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater received the best possible ratings in the September issue of Consumer Reports “Surgical Survival Guide,” a nationwide rating to help patients choose the right hospital for surgical procedures.

“Lakeview continues to strive to be one of the top hospitals nationally for patient safety and quality in all of its service lines. We are honored by the results and endorsement in the recent Consumer Reports,” said Curt Geissler, president of Lakeview Health. “We’re also very happy that our partner and primary referral hospital, Regions Hospital in St. Paul, also received the best possible ratings from Consumer Reports. We are very fortunate to have such high quality surgeons and medical care in the St. Croix Valley.”

Consumer Reports created surgery ratings to assist in the on-going effort to shed light on hospital quality and pushes the health-care industry toward more transparency. The magazine’s ratings look at how high-volume hospitals in each state compare in avoiding adverse events involving Medicare patients during their hospital stays for surgery.

The Consumer Reports recognition continues Lakeview Hospital’s history of high-ranking quality awards.

Barr earns ‘best firm’ rank

Publisher ZweigWhite named Barr Engineering Co. of Minneapolis as one of the top three environmental services firms to work for in the nation at the 2013 Best Firms to Work For Conference.

Barr also ranked seventh among civil engineering firms. Barr was previously named the “Best Environmental Services Firm to Work For” in 2011 as well as one of the top three civil engineering firms.

Rankings are based on the determinations of a panel of independent judges and results of employee surveys. Barr’s employee survey results were generally above the mean scores for all competing firms. Varr scored well above the mean in the categories of mentoring, professional development, support for philanthropy, communications, overtime policies, total compensation, distribution of profits, and benefits.

“We strive to maintain a culture where individual input is sought, valued, and can effect change,” said Barr CEO Doug Connell.

Barr Engineering is significantly larger than any of the other firms honored by ZweigWhite. Of the top 25 Best Civil Engineering Firms To Work For, Barr was the largest firm by more than 200 employees. Seven environmental services firms were honored, and Barr’s 655 employees outnumbered the second largest firm by almost 600.
