Valley Outreach launches school supply drive

Valley Outreach is launching a drive to collect and distribute classroom school supplies for children of struggling families in the St. Croix Valley, agency officials announced today.

Valley Outreach is asking community members to donate the five most common classroom supplies: a 12- or 24-pack of No. 2 pencils, glue sticks, wide- or college-rule spiral notebooks, 8-pack Crayola brand markers, and 24-pack Crayola brand crayons.

Valley Outreach Executive Director Christine Tubbs said the school-supply program helps children start the upcoming school year with a sense of renewal.

“We are finding that the needs of struggling families are growing greater, not diminishing. Nearly 30 percent of children attending Stillwater public schools are from low-income families needing assistance. When it’s hard to put food on the table, the idea of buying pencils or crayons is beyond what some parents can manage,” she said. “But there is nothing so full of promise for kids at the beginning of a school year than a fresh new set of crayons.”

Tubbs hopes that area churches and civic groups will be inspired to take on this project and solicit donations from their members. Donations can be dropped off at the Valley Outreach offices at 1911 Curve Crest Boulevard. West from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Valley Outreach asks that donations be given by Aug. 14 so they can be distributed to families before school starts. Parents can visit the Valley Outreach supply market from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 to collect a set of supplies for their children.

Call Kris at 342-5558 for more information about the program.

Valley Outreach is a community based, community-supported, privately funded non-profit organization serving St. Croix Valley neighbors in need.
