Work on the St. Croix Crossing bridge Minnesota approach continues this week with traffic changes on Minnesota highways 36 and 95 expected to begin the middle of this month, according to the state Department of Transportation.
In addition to the pending traffic changes, MnDOT reminds St. Croix River boaters that no-wake restrictions remain in the project work area on the river between Bayport and Stillwater. Crews will resume work at all five bridge pier locations in the river this week after high water last week forced work to shift from Pier 8 on the Minnesota side to Pier 12 on the Wisconsin side of the river.
The DNR had imposed no-wake rules on the river last week after the St. Croix level rose above 83 feet after heavy rains in the watersheds of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers caused the St. Croix level to rise.
The St. Croix was a 81.8 feet at 9:15 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS forecast calls for the St. Croix to continue slowly receding through the rest of the week.
MnDOT project officials said traffic impacts from the project this week include intermittent lane closures on MN 36 east of Osgood Avenue and lane shifts on MN 95 from Lookout Trail to Point Road; continued temporary bypass between MN 36 and southbound MN 95 from Beach Road and Stagecoach Trail, and closed neighborhood access from 59th Street to Peller and Penrose avenues in Oak Park Heights.
However, motorists can expect additional project-related traffic changes later this month as work increases on the bridge approach east of the MN 36-Osgood Avenue intersection, according to MnDOT officials. Changes include single-lane traffic on MN 36 from Osgood Avenue to MN 95; temporary traffic signals at the MN 36-MN 95 junction, and a weekend closure of MN 95 later this summer to remove the Beach Road flyover bridge at the MN 36 junction.
Despite the planned traffic changes, MnDOT stressed that access to businesses along MN 36 and MN 95 will remain open at all times.
