With opposing teams often shadowing Stillwater’s leading scorer Dana Almquist, senior Maggie Corman and others have picked up their share of the scoring load while helping the Ponies to their third straight section title.

Corman delivered four goals, including three in the first half, to help lead the Ponies to a 17-5 victory over East Ridge in the Section 4 championship game on Tuesday at Mounds View. Corman also provided a goal in Stillwater’s 20-4 victory over Park on Saturday. Corman and the Ponies, who also went unbeaten in SEC play, outscored their section opponents by a combined 57-14.

Stillwater (14-2) will play in the state quarterfinals at Chanhassen on Tuesday.

Austin Holmberg

Austin Holmberg’s stellar three-year career with the Stillwater baseball team ended with Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Cretin-Derham Hall in the Section 4AAA tourney.

The senior began that game with a lead-off single just like he has countless times this season, setting the table for Aaron Romportl and Connor Johnston in the No. 2 and 3 spots. Holmberg finished with a staggering 93 career hits, starting with his sophomore season when he contributed to Stillwater’s conference championship and third-place state tournament team. An outstanding center fielder, Holmberg hit safely in all five of the team’s section games.

The Ponies finished the season with a 14-10 record, including 10-8 in league play.
