Boys tennis: Ponies fall short against Park


OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater boys’ tennis team dropped to 0-3 in Suburban East Conference matches decided by a single point after falling to Park 4-3 on Monday at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies, who also lost one-point matches to Roseville and Hastings earlier this season, were unable to notch a fourth point against the Wolfpack, who two of three doubles matches — including the clinching victory at second doubles with the match tied at 3-all.

David Link and Lucas Lindstrom held off Stillwater’s Brady Tynen and Stone Xiong 7-5, 7-5 to provide the difference. The Wolfpack also received a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory from Sam Forthun and Jacob Elliott over Matt Treacy and Nate Anderson at first doubles.

“Exciting match, just not the ending we wished for,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said.

Nick Rheinberger prevailed for the Ponies at second singles and Brian Treacy added a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 triumph at the fourth spot. Stillwater lost in three sets at first singles with Mitch Johnson falling short against Mekdim Dejene 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Stillwater did rebound with a 4-3 victory over St. Paul Central on Tuesday as the No. 8 seed in the Section 4AA tourney. The Ponies (1-7 SEC, 3-8) advance to face top-seeded Mahtomedi in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

l Kurt Patterson and Steig Peterson of Stillwater defeated Jon Vong and Parker Adams 8-0 in an exhibition doubles play on Monday. Vong and Adams also defeated Jonathan Luk and Jack Leach 8-6.

At Oak Park Heights, the eighth-ranked Zephyrs showed why they are a strong favorite to return to the state tourney while dispatching Stillwater 7-0 in Saturday’s nonconference dual meet at SAHS.

Mahtomedi did not drop a set in the match.

“Mahtomedi showed why they are one of the top teams in the state. They are deep and talented,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “We played hard in tough, windy conditions.”

l Also on Saturday, Mahtomedi’s Josh Anderson defeated Kurt Patterson (8-2) and Jack Leach (8-0) in exhibition singles matches.
