COTTAGE GROVE — The Stillwater boys’ golf team delivered a strong showing on Tuesday at River Oaks Golf Course, moving into third place in the Suburban East Conference standings in the process.
Just three shots separated the top four teams, with Forest Lake’s winning total of 312 just one shot in front of runner-up Cretin-Derham Hall (313) and the third-place Ponies (314). Mounds View and East Ridge were not far back at 315 and 318 while Woodbury’s seventh-place showing (323) — and its own solid performance — allowed Stillwater to slide into third place in the overall league standings.
“We are officially at the halfway point of the season,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “We’re in good position, but will need to play better.”
Evan Anderson set the pace for Stillwater with a 75 and Lars Lillehei turned in a 78. Crosby Joy and Sammy Sicard filled out the team card at 80 and 81.
“Every team in the state is looking for that solid No. 3 and 4 player,” Scanlon said. “The great news for today is that we definitely have them. Evan and Crosby are both so talented and, more importantly, work very hard on their game. Evan’s score was one of the low rounds of the tournament.”
John LeClair (85) and Seamus McGuinness (87) filled out the lineup for Stillwater.
The Ponies are slated to compete in conference events at Highland National on Wednesday and Hastings Country Club on Thursday before closing out the regular season with the SEC Tournament at Indian Hills Golf Club on Tuesday. Stillwater will also compete at the Albert Lea Invitational this weekend and the Duluth East Invitational on Monday.
