COTTAGE GROVE — It was impressive showing even without the story behind Erin Thiets’ performance in Monday’s season opener for the Stillwater girls’ golf team.
Thiets, who missed the entire basketball season with a knee injury, shot a 41 to help the Ponies to a fourth-place finish in a Suburban East Conference meet at River Oaks Golf Course. The sophomore is back playing golf just five months after ACL surgery.
“It was an outstanding effort,” Ponies coach Nate Schwarz said. “She’s off to a great start on the year.”
The defending conference champion Ponies turned in a score of 191 to finish nine shots behind first-place East Ridge (182). Cretin-Derham Hall (184) and Forest Lake (186) followed in second and third.
Leah Kroening carded a 45 for Stillwater while Amanda Wolf and Maddie Luoma completed the scoring with a 52 and 53. Two-time defending state champion Celia Kuenster claimed medalist honors with a 2-under 33.
l Also on Monday, the Stillwater JV team placed 15th at the 19-team Elk River Invitational, which included varsity and JV teams. Freshman Ana Reding led the Ponies with a 103.
