BROOKLYN PARK — Stillwater senior Lars Lillehei opened his season with a top-20 finish at the prestigious Tri-State Invite at Edinburgh USA.
Competing as an individual along with teammate Sammy Sicard, but without the rest of their teammates joining them in the two-day, 20-team tournament, Lillehei tied for 19th place with a score of 155. He shot a 2-over 74 in Friday’s opening round and followed up with an 81 on Saturday. Sicard shot 84 and 87 for a 171 total that left him in 53rd place out of 110 players.
Chris Captain of Rochester Century was the individual medalist after shooting 71-68 for an impressive 139 total, six shots in front of runner-up Jacques Wilson (75-70—145) of team champion Minnetonka.
The Skippers turned in a team score of 604 to easily hold off second-place Wayzata (623). Three teams from the Suburban East Conference competed in the event, with White Bear Lake tying for 14th place with a score of 679 and Forest Lake (682) and East Ridge (686) finishing close behind in 16th and 17th.
Lillehei was the top finisher among all SEC competitors in the field.
“It was great to finally be outdoors,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “The guys were a little rusty, but that’s OK. We showed well against the best players in the upper midwest and we’re looking forward to a busy five-week season coming up.”
