Senior Shelby Ahrendt was named the Most Valuable Athlete for the Stillwater girls and senior Sean Bjork was similarly honored for the Stillwater boys after qualifying for his third state meet and placing 14th to earn all-state honors.
Ahrendt, the only senior in Stillwater’s line-up which placed fourth at state, was joined in earning all-conference honors by teammates Vessa Pearsall, Megan Weaver, Cela Peterson, Shelby Ahrendt, Haley Beech, Sofie Wicklund and Anya Nelson. Morgan McBride and Sammi Potts were honorable mention all-conference selections for the Ponies and Ahrendt also garnered academic all-state honors.
Stillwater, which finished second in the Suburban East Conference before capturing the Section 4 championship, honored Potts with the Leadership Award and Nelson was presented the Most Improved Skier award. Hannah Beech, Siri Bohacek and Siri Brochman were named the Best New Skier(s). Haley Beech, Pearsall, McBride and Weaver were named captains for the 2013-14 team.
Bjork, meanwhile, was joined at the state meet by senior teammates Paul Larson and Kellen Wessels. That trio was joined in earning All-SEC honors by Luke Richie, Sam Hanson and Linder Wendt while Mike Gilleo, Matt Trumper and Davis Gray were honorable mention all-conference honorees. Bjork also received academic all-state recognition.
They helped the Ponies to a second-place finish in the conference and a runner-up finish at the Section 4 meet.
Wessels was presented the Leadership Award for the Ponies while Wendt and Nolan Noer were co-recipients of the Most Improved Skier award. Senior Matt Fronczak was chosen the Best New Skier. Stefan Nelson, Gray, Reis Jones and David Ross were voted captains for next year’s team.
“Both girls and boys had a great season, especially when the weather finally turned winter-like in January,” Ponies co-head coach Kris Hansen said. “We had some great leadership from our senior class this year. It’s a great group and we’ll really miss them next season.”
Following the presentation of awards to the numerous athletes who produced successful seasons, the Ponies paid tribute to 25 volunteers who contribute to the program in a variety of ways, including coaching, waxing and fundraising.
