This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Wrestling — Dustin Dahlblom defeats Adam Rall of Henry Sibley 8-6 in the finals to win his second straight individual state wrestling championshp at 145 pounds. The senior finishes his career as the program’s all-time wins leader with a 183-48 record and joins Jack McPherson (1966 and 1968) as the school’s only two-time state champion. Stillwater senior Alex Cadwell joins Dahlblom on the medal stand while placing fourth at 220 pounds.
Boys swimming and diving — Led by two-time individual section champion Joey Chapman (50 and 100 freestyle), the Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team qualifies seven athletes for a total of eight entries in the state meet after placing second behind Mounds View 513-475 at the Section 4AA championships. Erik Semrud (100 butterfly) and Dave Pearson (500 freestyle) also win individual section titles for the Ponies, who also qualify their 400 freestyle relay team and divers Collin Grigg and Mike Schwartz.
Girls basketball — St. Paul Central outscores the Ponies 17-8 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 55-52 victory in the Section 3AAAA girls’ basketball semifinals at Arlington High School. Sarah Cotner leads Stillwater with 12 points and Marie Jambois chips in with 11.
VAA wrestling — The St. Croix Valley Athletic Association and the Stillwater Wrestling Club send 12 wrestlers ages 5-15 to the Minnesota/USA Folkstyle State Tournament and 10 of those participants return with trophies or medals. Peter Klingbiel places first while Sebastian Dingle, Tom Powers and Brian Reier are runner-ups.
