This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Alpine skiing — Led by seniors John Brine, Ryan Tierney, John Polasik and Ryan Reed, the Stillwater boys’ alpine ski team places third at the state meet behind St. Thomas Academy and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Brine is the top finisher with a fifth-place finish in the team competition and also places seventh in the individual event. The Stillwater girls place seventh at the state meet, with reigning state champion Katie Lee slipping to third place in the afternoon’s individual competition.
Boys swimming and diving — Joey Chapman sets a Suburban East Conference record in the in the 100 freestyle at 49.54 to help lead Stillwater to a 60-47 victory over Mounds View and an undefeated regular season to repeat as conference champion. Chapman also prevails in the 50 freestyle to join teammates Kyle Orf and Jeff Peterson with two individual victories apiece.
Girls hockey — The Stillwater girls’ hockey team scores goals late in the third period to slip past Irondale and White Bear Lake by matching scores of 3-2 in the Section 3AA quarterfinals and semifinals. Sarah Heinbigner delivers the game-winner against the Knights and Sarah Connelly provides the difference with two third-period goals against the Bears.
Running — Stillwater graduate and Notre Dame senior Luke Watson shatters the four-minute mark while winning the speedy one-mile race at the Meyo Invitational — a race where the fifth-place finisher turns in a time of 3:58.24. The All-American shatters the Notre Dame school record in the process — one of four Irish records held by Watson.
