Gymnastics: Ponies notch season-high score in SEC victory

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater gymnastiics team delivered its best performance of the season while knocking off Cretin-Derham hall in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference finale at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies (8-1 SEC, 8-1), who finished second in the conference standings, outscored the Raiders 142.45-133.525 while easily surpassing their previous high score of 140.4 set at the St. Cloud Tech Invite in mid-Decmember.

“We finished our regular season with our best meet and highest score as we celebrated our seniors on their last meet at home,” Ponies coach Traci Swenson said.

Kylie Wittl set a personal best while winning the all-around with a score of 37.825. The senior, who blew a kiss to her teammates as part of her final pose to wrap up the floor routine in her final event at SAHS, posted the highest score in all four events, including matching scores of 9.475 in the bars, beam and floor. She also receive a 9.4 in the vault.

Lillyan Pan finished second in the vault with a score of 9.2 and placed third in the beam at 9.05. Sidnee Ronsberg was Stillwater’s second finisher and third overall in the floor with a score of 8.925.

Natalie Jantschek finished third in the uneven bars for the Ponies with a score of 8.875.

l Also on Thursday, the Stillwater JV team defeated the Raiders 123.6-115.7. The Ponies were led by Sami Matschi (9.0) in the vault, Rachel Murphy (7.8) in the bars, Maggie Germundson in the beam (7.7) and floor (8.3).

l Stillwater will host the JV conference meet on Saturday and then travel to White Bear Lake for the Section 4AA meet on Feb. 16 where the Ponies are hoping to defend their section championship.
