Boys hockey: Sagissor lifts Ponies in overtime

ROSEVILLE — Scoring his second game-winner in four games, Sam Sagissor struck in overtime on Thursday to give the Stillwater boys’ hockey team a 5-4 victory over Roseville at Roseville Ice Arena.

Sagissor also provide the deciding goal in a 2-1 victory over Park to end a five-game losing streak for the Ponies on Jan. 26. Stillwater has played better since, going 2-1-1 in its last four games.

“It was a very good effort,” Ponies coach Phil Housley said. “I’m really glad after that effort against Mounds View that we didn’t have a letdown, we built on that. We’ve lost some valuable players on our team, some impact guys, but we’re competing. We have to realize that we have to play a simple game, even with those guys you want to play a simple game, this is about details and making smart plays. The Mounds View game was an eye opener that we can compete with very good teams, but we have to play a certain way.”

The game was tight throughout, with three lead changes before Nick Anderson tied the game for Stillwater with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

Sagissor’s game-winner came on a shot from the slot that he buried past goaltender Zach Larson, who finished with 30 saves.

Payton Hosch, Zach Eder-Zdechlik and Wyatt Stotts also scored goals for the balanced Ponies, who also played more than two periods without top defenseman Mitch Reinke after he left with an injury.

“I’m proud of the way we competed for 51-plus minutes and we showed some resiliency,” Housley said. “We had things go our way and then we didn’t have things go our way, but they stuck with it. I think this is a good confidence builder for us.”

Colton Anderson turned away 28 shots, including two in overtime, for the Ponies.
