ST. PAUL — Hot outside shooting sparked Stillwater to a 16-point halftime lead and the Ponies didn’t let up while posting a 66-49 Suburban East Conference victory over Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday night.

The Ponies (6-3 SEC, 10-4) drained six 3-pointers in the first half, including three by Tony Lennox and two by Aaron Romportl, to spark the fast start. Andrew Duxbury, who finished with a game-high 21 points, Romportl and Lennox each scored nine points before halftime. Stillwater scored the first nine points of the game and the Raiders (3-7, 7-10) never pulled within closer than that margin in the second half.

“I think we’ve become more consistent,” Ponies coach Randy Jordan said. “We had a good week shooting and we’re getting more comfortable with offensive flow and the kids are learning they can play at a fast pace or when we need to slow it down. Our defense has also been pretty consistent, not giving up any easy baskets.”

With its lead in the second half, the Ponies were able to dictate the pace and continued its solid shooting from the field — making 16 of 32 inside the three-point arc and 6-13 from beyond. By comparison, Cretin-Derham Hall shot just 15 of 54 in the game, including 7 for 27 from three-point range.

Sophomore Joe Rosga, who is just returning from an season-long injury, finished with 19 points to lead the Raiders and Sam Neumann added 10, which is well below his season average.

“I thought we did a nice job defensively on Neumann,” Jordan said. “He’s averaging close to 20 and we didn’t let him get on a roll.”

Stillwater did commit 21 turnovers compared to just 13 for the Raiders, but the Ponies held a 41-27 rebounding edge.

“To beat them and East Ridge on the road, I thought was a good week for us,” Jordan said.
