Boys basketball: Ponies stretch winning streak to four in a row

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — Stillwater was unable to match the energy from its game 24 hours earlier, but had enough in the tank to hold off Hudson 58-52 in Saturday’s nonconference game at Stillwater Area High School.

Aaron Romportl led a balanced scoring attack for the Ponies (6-3 SEC, 11-4) with 12 points while Andrew Duxbury and Sam Lagus chipped in with 11 points apiece in a game that remained close throughout.

The Raiders tied the game with about four minutes remaining, but Stillwater pulled away at the free throw line behind Chad Schlosser and Aaron Romportl.

“It was close all the way and they were very patient,” Stillwater coach Randy Jordan said. “They don’t force a lot of things.”

Alex Herink, who at 6-foot-7 anchors an imposing front court for the Raiders who also start two other 6-5 players, led all scorers with 22 points.

Matt Anderson pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Ponies, who held a 24-16 advantage on the boards.

“My main concern was Lagus and Dux played a lot of minutes on Friday and I was a little afraid of their legs,” Jordan said. “We didn’t have the energy of Friday and the shooting was a little surprise because usually when you’re tired you don’t shoot as well, but that was a big part of the game.”
