WOODBURY — Evan Broadbent stopped 48 shots to notch the hard-earned shutout as Woodbury blanked Stillwater 4-0 in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference boys’ hockey game at Bielenberg Ice Arena.
It marked the fifth straight loss for the Ponies (4-7-1 SEC, 7-9-1), who have not won since a 5-2 victory over East Ridge on Jan. 5.
“We threw (48) shots at him,” Stillwater coach Phil Housley said. “There was a point where we were down 3-0 in the second period and the shots were 24-6. We are in this rut where every mistake is getting blown up and put in the net.”
Stillwater held a 48-25 advantage in shots on goal, but could not solve Broadbent, who made 20 saves in the second period alone.
“When you look at the last two games, the goalie play has been the difference,” Housley said.
Jordan Graham and Sam Gazzola scored in the opening period for Woodbury — the latter coming with just 25 seconds remaining in the period.
The Ponies outshot Woodbury 20-6 in the second period, but saw their deficit grow after Dan Armstrong and Hayden Shaw scored within the first five minutes to build a four-goal cushion.
Pat Courteau and Colton Anderson combined to make 21 saves for the Ponies, who travel to Park for a conference match-up on Saturday at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.
“The effort is there, we just have to continue to improve and get better,” Housley said. “The one thing with all the players we do have that are out is the others who are getting some experience and we have to rely on that getting us some wins.”
