APPLE VALLEY — About 12 hours after sweeping Friday’s conference triangular at White Bear Lake, the Stillwater wrestling team competed in Saturday’s Eastview Tournament.
The Ponies forfeited in three weight classes and their top wrestler Austin Jordan did not compete, but Stillwater did produce six placewinners to place seventh in the team standings with 99 points. Shakopee totaled 189 points to outdistance runner-up Faribault in the 12-team individual tournament.
“The kids were tired,” Ponies coach Rich Keller said. “They needed a couple days off.”
Christian Bahl at 106 pounds and Sebastian Dingle at 182 pounds each advanced to the finals before settling for second place while Dillan Nelson and Matt Riehle each posted 3-1 records to place third at 126 and 132 pounds.
Bahl, who is ranked fifth in the Class AAA state rankings, fell to No. 2-ranked Taylor Venz of Farmington 10-2 in the finals. The Stillwater eighth-grader did not have an easy path to the finals as he prevailed 4-1 over third-ranked Josh Bryant of Coon Rapids in the semifinals.
Dingle, meanwhile, improved to 16-9 this season after pinning Mike Sampson of Chisago Lakes and Alex King of Shakopee to earn a spot in the finals, where he was pinned by Faribault’s Cole McAdam in 3:11 to finish second.
“Christian and Sebastian wrestled really well,” Keller said.
Nelson was pinned by George Farmah of Eastview in the opening round, but rebounded to win his next two matches — including a 6-4 win over ninth-ranked Brandon Peters of Faribault — and then turned the tables with a 6-4 victory over Farmah in the third-place match. Riehle fell to Tanner Hennen of Shakopee 9-3 in the semifinals before rebounding with narrow victories over Tyson Leon of Shakopee (5-4) and Tyler Broughton of Faribault (4-2) to capture third place.
“Dillan battled back and beat the kid he lost to in the first round,” Keller said. “He wrestled really well.”
Competing at 152 and 195 pounds, Stillwater’s Collin Olson and Mitchell Schertz each won two matches to place fifth. Olson defeated Kamal Hassan of Rosemount in the fifth-place match while Schertz held off Mike Beckmann of Faribault 6-5 in his final match.
“Collin Olson and Schertz from Friday and Saturday carried it on really well,” Keller said. “They’re kind of hitting a stride right now and wrestling well.”
