The Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team has advanced to True Team state for the eighth time in the popular event’s nine-year history while cruising to a victory in the True Team Section 4AA meet on Saturday at Stillwater Junior High School.

The state meet is scheduled for Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Ponies (4-2 SEC, 4-2), who are ranked fifth in the state coaches poll, finished first in nine of 12 events and scored 747 points to outdistance second-place Woodbury (548) and third-place Park (394).

“I thought they swam and dove equally as well as Thursday — and you never know what you’re going to get on a Saturday afternoon after a big meet like that,” Stillwater coach Brian Luke said.

The usual events provided most of the highlights for the Ponies on Saturday, including a record-setting performance by Colin Eason in diving. The junior posted a winning score of 373.40 to edge teammate Liam Gibb (367.70) for the top spot and break the previous section record held by Mounds View’s Tom Gimm since 2006. Anthony Shanley was not far behind for the Ponies in fifth place with a score of 276.15.

The Ponies placed four swimmers among the top five in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and sixth different athletes netted a first-place finish, including: Jesse Busse (200 freestyle), Tom Windett (50 freestyle), Max Larson (100 butterfly), Dominic Jankowski (500 freestyle) and Marcus Green (100 backstroke).

“The sprinters are coming along,” Luke said. “They did pretty good there, we’re just trying to get some depth in those relays.”

Stillwater also swept all three relays.
