This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Girls hockey — One game after scoring a hat trick in a 7-1 victory over Forest Lake, Stillwater eighth-grader Chelsey Jones delivers four goals and adds an assist in a 7-3 triumph over Woodbury.
Boys soccer — After leading the Ponies to a 19-2-0 season, senior midfielder Eric Blythe is chosen to the 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association of America U16 All-America Team. The three-year starter for the Ponies is one of just 20 players in the country to receive the honor. Tony Scheuerman, Jeff Kogl, Marshall Morehead and Dana Kurttila were previous Ponies who received High School All-America honors, but Blythe is the first Stillwater player to receive Youth All-America recognition.
Business — Mike Quinlan, a 1956 Stillwater graduate and outstanding three-sport athlete (football, basketball and track), is named the Colorado Business Leader of the Year by the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry. Quinlan, who is a senior vice president of the United States Automobile Association based in Colorado Springs, also played football at the Air Force Academy and served as a captain his senior year when the Falcons tied TCU in the Cotton Bowl.
