Natalie Gjermo — Girls alpine skiing
Following an indifferent performance at the season-opening Wild Mountain Invite, the Stillwater girls’ alpine ski team is off to a strong start with victories in each of its first Suburban East Conference races.
Natalie Gjermo has contributed to first-place efforts by the Ponies at Welch Village on Jan. 3 and at Afton Alps on Tuesday. The junior was Stillwater’s top finisher in fourth place with a time of 1:05.8 on Tuesday, narrowing edging fifth-place teammate Story Schwantes. Gjermo finished seventh at Welch Village when she turned in a time of 1:00.86 as the Ponies held off rivals Mounds View and East Ridge each time.
Stillwater is slated to compete at the Buck Hill Invite on Friday.
Liam Gibb — Boys swimming and diving
Few teams can match Stillwater’s strength in diving — a trio that is led by four-time state qualifier Liam Gibb.
The senior placed second with a score of 204.45, which was just 1.05 out of first place, at Saturday’s Maroon and Gold Invitational as the Ponies finished eighth overall in the rugged 14-team field in the Gold Division. Gibb also turned in a winning score of 195.75 to finish in front of teammates Colin Eason and Anthony Shanley in Tuesday’s 94-81 Suburban East Conference victory over Forest Lake. Prior to that, he posted a score of 210.05 in a conference win over Park on Jan. 3.
The Ponies (3-1 SEC, 3-1) travel to White Bear Lake dual meet tonight.
