HUDSON, Wis. — St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office investigators are trying to learn what led a Wisconsin woman to jump to her death this morning from the Interstate 94 bridge over the St. Croix River.
The identity of the victim, a 48-year-old Pierce County, Wis., resident, is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, according to the SCCSO.
Officers from several agencies and EMS responded to the scene about 8:30 a.m. today. Witnesses told investigators the woman stopped her vehicle on the eastbound shoulder of I-94 about 100 yards west of the St. Croix River shoreline, got out, leaving her 11-year-old daughter in the vehicle, then climbed the bridge railing and jumped to her death.
Authorities used an airboat to recover the victim’s body from the ice-covered river. Assisting the SCCSO were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Lower St. Croix Valley Fire and EMS Service.
SCCSO officials said the victim’s daughter is in the care of other family members in Wisconsin.
