SAHS Athletes of the Week
Paige Becker — Girls basketball
The Stillwater girls’ basketball team is already showing signs of improvement since its season opening loss to Edina and post player Paige Becker has been a key part of that push.
The 5-foot-10 senior delivered 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Ponies ran past St. Paul Highland Park for a 70-40 nonconference victory on Tuesday. Becker also provided a team-high 12 points in Stillwater’s 42-41 loss against Rochester Mayo on Saturday. Both of those games showed progress after falling to Edina 46-25 in the season opener under new head coach Gerard Coury at Stillwater Area High School.
The Ponies (1-2) host Mahtomedi in a nonconference game on Friday.
Dillan Nelson — Wrestling
The Stillwater wrestling jumped right into the fire this season with four of its first five opponents ranked among the state’s top 12 in Class AAA by The Guillotine.
Junior Dillan Nelson is off to a 4-1 start at 126 pounds, including a pin against seventh-ranked Reid Lyden in Friday’s season-opening 60-12 victory over East Ridge. Nelson also pinned Teddy Pierce in just 58 seconds to help the Ponies knock off Forest Lake 43–32 in another conference dual. Nelson suffered his first and only loss to Dakota Wangsness of Albert Lea on Saturday at Hastings, but also posted victories against Prior Lake and Centennial.
Stillwater (2-0 SEC, 2-3) travels to Wayzata for a nonconference triangular on Thursday.
