SAHS Athletes of the Week
Savannah Johnson — Girls tennis
Helping the Stillwater girls’ tennis team advance to state for the first time since 2007, second singles player Savannah Johnson has been rock solid behind Ponies ace Natalie Phippen in the singles lineup this season.
The freshman handed Mahtomedi’s Olivia Paradise her first loss of the season 6-4, 6-1 during Stillwater’s 6-1 victory over the Zephyrs in the Section 4AA finals on Monday at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. Johnson also defeated Nicole Robinson of East Ridge 6-1, 6-2 in Friday’s 4-3 section semifinal victory.
Stillwater (15-2) will compete at individual sections today and Tuesday and the state quarterfinals are set for Oct. 23.
Matt Fronczak — Boys cross country
In a lineup filled with heavy hitters, Matt Fronczak has been perhaps the most pleasant surprise this season for coach Scott Christensen and the top-ranked Stillwater boys’ cross country team.
The senior has never run cross country before this fall and has earned a spot in the state’s best lineup while improving on his personal best time in all six races this season. Fronczak placed 17th overall at Saturday’s Meet of Champions in Alexandria with a time of 16:42.3. Less than a week earlier, Fronczak was Stillwater’s sixth runner and placed 21st overall in a time of 16:56.6 at the Chaska Lions Invitational.
The Ponies are scheduled to compete at the SEC Championships on Tuesday.
