HUDSON, Wis. — Three St. Croix County, Wis., Sheriff’s deputies are on administrative leave after they fatally shot a man who fired on them outside a rural home Saturday night.
Deputies were sent to the Eau Galle Township residence south of Baldwin, Wis., about 7:20 p.m. after a woman called 9-1-1 to report that her husband was suicidal, drunk and armed, investigators said..
Deputies secured the area around the home at 2648 Boston Road and shortly after 9 p.m., the man emerged from the home carrying a rifle and two handguns. He then confronted deputies at the end of his driveway, firing at least two shots at the officers.
Three SCCSO deputies returned fire at the man, who died at the scene, said an SCCSO official.
Although a sheriff’s department news released did not identify the victim, various media reports identified the man was Patrick McDonnell.
It is unclear what sparked the incident but a divorce might have been pending, according to a sheriff’s department official.
The Pierce County and Polk County Sheriff’s offices and Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation are leading the investigation of the incident. The Wisconsin State Patrol also assisted.
