BLOOMINGTON — It was a brief, but gratifying season opener for the Stillwater volleyball team under first-year head coach Jamie Suapaia on Tuesday as the Ponies cruised to a 3-0 victory over Bloomington Jefferson.
The Ponies were in control throughout while winning by scores of 25-5, 25-2 and 25-10.
“Jefferson is a young team,” Suapaia said. “They graduated a lot of seniors last year so they’re a fairly new team. We just got back to the basics, our passing and our serving separated us. It was balanced pretty well and our setters did a pretty good job of spreading out the court.”
Savannah Sprenger served 18 straight points for Stillwater in the opening game and followed that up with a 15-point run from the serve line in Game 2 before subbing out.
Susan Evans and Janae Momchilovich handled the setting duties effectively all night, including plenty of opportunities for the middle hitters.
“They did a good job of setting the right hitter instead of the easy one,” Suapaia said. “We just did a really good job of ball handling and we’re just pleased with how we played and excited we got the first one under our belts.”
The Ponies will be busy next week when they travel to Eagan on Tuesday before hosting Apple Valley in their home opener on Sept. 6 and then competing in the Apple Valley tournament on Sept. 7-8.
