Gas leak at Stillwater prison under control; no injuries reported

A contractor digging to replace concrete early today at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater hit a gas line near the industry unit of the prison, prison officials reported.
The industry unit is where prisoners do things such as manufacturing, metalwork, upholstery work and woodworking.
“Our staff train for this type of thing all the time,” said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sara Russell. “They evacuated all the offenders immediately and moved them back to their living units.”
No one was injured. The Bayport Fire and Police departments and Xcel Energy crews responded to the scene and contained the leak.
The gas leak is now capped and there is no danger to the surrounding areas, Russell said.
