Sports briefs: Stillwater softball receive No. 3 seed

The Stillwater softball team received the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the Section 4AAA tourney, which begins Monday.

The Ponies (13-7) and White Bear Lake tied for the third seed, but Stillwater won a coin flip to decide who would be seeded third and fourth – a not insignificant difference when you consider only the top three seeds receive a first-round bye.

Stillwater will host the winner of No. 11 Tartan vs. No. 6 East Ridge in the quarterfinals of the winners bracket on Tuesday. White Bear Lake will host Mahtomedi in a first-round game on Monday.

The top two seeds in the section are Hill-Murray, which Stillwater defeated 2-1 on Wednesday and defending section champion North St. Paul, which has qualified for state each of the past three years and seven of the past eight.
