ALBERT LEA – Several of the top teams in the state were included in the field at the two-day Albert Lea Invitational, where the Stillwater boys’ golf team tied for 11th place in the standings.

The Ponies opened with a score of 320 at Green Lea Golf Course on Friday and followed with a 329 on Saturday at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club for a 349, which tied Chaska. Lakeville South totaled 624 to win the 21-team event while first-round leader Chanhassen shot a 318 on Day 2 to slide back one spot into second place at 326 after winning a tie-breaker with Eden Prairie, which also finished at 326.

"The real winner was the wind, which blew at 30 miles per hour both days," Ponies coach John Scanlon said.

Jeff Carstens paced a senior-heavy Stillwater lineup with a two-day total of 163 while Bennett Anderson and Charley Clements finished two shots back at 165. Clements opened with a 79 for Stillwater’s only sub-80 round on Friday and Anthony Johnson closed with a 78 on Saturday for a two-round total of 166.

"The trip was partially a reward to seniors and they delivered. "It is nice to see a senior and captain like Charley Clements do well. He is such a fine young man and a six-year member of the golf team. His leadership on and off the course this year has been immeasurably valuable."

Lars Lillehei and Sammy Sicard finished at 167 and 169 for the Ponies.

Cretin-Derham Hall’s Tony Gergen carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday to earn medalist honors by five shots with a 145 total.
