Baseball: Stillwater tops Spartans in five innings

OAK PARK HEIGHTS – Matching its longest winning streak of the season, the Stillwater baseball team made short work of Richfield in Tuesday’s 11-1 nonconference victory in five innings at Stillwater Area High School.

Christian Abilla allowed just two hits in four innings to notch the victory in a game that also featured a balanced offensive attack for the Ponies (12-6). Abilla allowed an unearned run in the fourth and Tony Lennox threw a scoreless fifth to close out the game.

"Christian pitched a nice game," Stillwater coach Mike Parker said. "His ball was moving a little bit and he was throwing pretty hard."

With four games on the schedule this week, the coach showcased his team’s depth while giving rare starts to four or five players who normally come off the bench. Seven different players combined for Stillwater’s 10 hits and Aaron Romportl, Abilla, A.J. Johnson, Aaron Driscoll and Austin Holmberg each drove in one run.

Mike Wicker enjoyed a strong day at the plate while belting out three hits, including two doubles, for a total of three RBIs.

The Ponies broke open the game with seven runs in the fourth.

"With four games this week we wanted to see some other guys get in the lineup and we thought the Tuesday game would be good to do that," Parker said. "After a night win at Forest Lake (on Monday) I was worried about our guys coming out and being complacent and I thought putting new guys in they would be hungry and they wouldn’t have that hangover."
