10 years ago this week….

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Softball – Facing a White Bear Lake team coached by Bob Beedle, the Stillwater softball team defeats the Bears 6-5 in the first championship game of the Section 4AA tournament before falling 4-1 in the finale. The Ponies, playing under interim coach Gerry Suardini, finish the season with a 19-6 record – with four of those losses coming against White Bear Lake.

Boys golf – Stillwater junior Ben Costello fires a 75 at Bunker Hills Golf Course during the Section 4AA tournament to earn a trip to the state tournament for the Ponies, who place fifth with a score of 319. Justin Magill delivers the shot of the day while recording an ace on the par-3 third hole on the East course.

Synchronized swimming – Behind first-place finishes in the extended solo (Bridget Nelson), extended duet (Nelson and Caitlin Rooney) and extended team (Abby Beltrame, Erin Brandt, Caitlin Campbell, Amy Carr, Lisa Kasperson, Nelson, Rooney and Brittany Speich) events, the Ponies win their fifth straight state championship. The Ponies outscore runner-up St. Louis Park 125-101 to win their 17 title in the last 24 years.
