Boys tennis: Ponies top St. Paul Central


OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater boys’ tennis team opened its season with a 5-2 nonconference victory over St. Paul Central on Wednesday at Stillwater Area High School.

The Minutemen notched victories at first and second singles, but the Ponies (1-0) swept the three doubles matches in straight sets and received victories from Brian Treacy and Jonathan Luk at third and fourth singles.

“They had a couple of really nice players at the top of the lineup, but our depth won out today,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “It was nice to get the first team win under our belts.”

Treacy defeated Bryn Shank 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Luk followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Jamie Steinman at fourth singles.

Daniel Ahrendt and freshman Jack Leach turned in a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the first spot to pace a doubles lineup that did not feature any seniors. Juniors Nate Anderson and Matt Treacy prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at second doubles while John Talbot and Ryan Burger breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 at the third position.

n Seniors Riley Hollerbach (6-1) and Ryan Murphy (6-3) each won exhibition singles matches for the Ponies on Wednesday.
