Girls tennis: Ponies top Park in SEC opener

COTTAGE GROVE — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team opened Suburban East Conference play with a 7-0 victory at Park of Cottage Grove on Thursday, Aug. 31.

It was an efficient victory for the Ponies (1-0 SEC, 4-1), who lost a combined nine games in seven matches.

Ani Bailey, Elizabeth Quinn, Claire Gorman and Anna Lindeberg each posted resounding singles victories and the Ponies also swept the doubles.

At Circle Pines, another strong singles showing lifted the Ponies to a 5-2 nonconference victory at Centennial on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Stillwater did not lose a set in singles, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory for Elizabeth Quinn over Quinn Bliss at the No. 2 spot. Ani Bailey pulled away for a 6-4, 6-0 win over Chloe Ouren at first singles.

Claire Gorman and Molly Anderson also prevailed for Stillwater at third and fourth singles.

Allison Benning and Lauren Friederichs dispatched Centennial’s Hallie Doce and Kaitlyn Davis 6-0, 6-3 at third doubles, but the Cougars earned victories at first and second doubles.

Kaitlyn Moore and Mia Troska outlasted Stillwater’s Jana Myers and Catherine Monty 14-12 in the third-set super tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets 7-5 and 3-6. Rachel Garofalo and Emma Olson notched the other point for Centennial with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rosie Braun and Erin Gallion.

“The singles rolled, as well as third doubles,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “We dropped a couple of close ones at first and second doubles, but all in all it was a nice team victory.”
