The Bayport Library is celebrating the return of open hours on Saturdays after the summer break with a performance by flamenco guitarist Michael Hauser and a flamenco dancer at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.
“It will be our first Saturday back, so we through it would be a good time to have a fun musical event,” said library director Jill Smith.
This is the second year the library has featured a global music performance for the first Saturday in September.
“We had a pretty good response to our Japanese drum performers last year,” Smith said.
This year, the library welcomes Twin Cities flamenco guitarist Michael Hauser, who will be joined by a flamenco dancer from the Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater. Flamenco is a type of music and dance from southern Spain.
“There is an audience for different music and dance from around the world here,” Smith said.
Funding for the program comes from the Minnesota Legacy Amendment and allows the library to bring in arts and heritage events.
Smith’s previous job was in the Anoka County library system, and Smith was inspired by a music program there to bring in world music artists.
“In Anoka County, they have a ‘Live at the Library’ music program,” Smith said. “So when I started here, I thought it would be a good idea to try something like that.”
Smith said the upcoming event has had a positive response from the community.
“We are hoping that families and area residents come to enjoy the performance,” Smith said. “It’s a good event to bring kids to, and also an event that older residents will enjoy.”
The event is free, but Smith said seating my be limited due to the size of the room. The Bayport Public Library is located at 582 N. Fourth St. in Bayport.
