Girls tennis: Stillwater netters improve to 2-1

A loss to the defending champion is the only dual meet hiccup early this season for the Stillwater girls’ tennis team.

The Ponies (2-1) defeated Mounds Park Academy 5-2 on the road on Wednesday, Aug. 23 before falling to No. 2-ranked Mahtomedi 7-0 in another nonconference match on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Stillwater bounced back with a 6-1 triumph over Hill-Murray on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The Ponies were also slated to face Chisago Lakes on Aug. 30, but that was postponed because of rain.

Stillwater lost in three sets at first singles, but swept the other three matches in straight sets and also won all three doubles points in the victory over Hill-Murray.

Ani Bailey pushed Hill-Murray’s Monica Zink to three sets before falling 6-1, 6-7 (9-7), (10-6) at first singles, but Elizabeth Quinn, Claire Gorman and Molly Anderson each followed with singles victories for Stillwater.

The Ponies prevailed in straight sets at first and third doubles and Rosie Braun and Erin Gallion rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, (10-8) win at second doubles.

“It was a nice team nonconference win,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said.

Stillwater ran into a buzz saw when Mahtomedi visited on Aug. 29. The Zephyrs won decisively at the top three singles spots and at first doubles, but the Ponies were more competitive at the remaining positions.

Molly Anderson won the first set of her match against Mahtomedi’s Natalie Ostrand at fourth singles before falling 3-6, 7-5, (10-6). Anderson led 5-3 in the second set before Ostrand charged back to win four straight games and the third-set super tie-breaker.

Mahtomedi also won at second doubles with Sarah Hoffman and Elena Carlson clipping Braun and Gallion 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Isabell Birkland and Nina Van Der Low held off Stillwater’s Allison Benning and Lauren Friederichs 7-5, 6-4 at third doubles.

“We played a good match against Mahtomedi, but came up on the short end on all of them,” Kahl said. “We had great chances to win at least sets at second and third doubles, but couldn’t win some big points. Across the board, I felt we played well in spite of the scores at the other four positions.”

Mounds Park Academy won at first singles and first doubles, but the Ponies won in straight sets at the other spots to knock off the Panthers 5-2 on Aug. 23.

“We had a nice win to kick off the dual match season,” Kahl said. “Our depth was too strong for them.”
