This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Boys track and field — Stillwater senior Ben Blankenship holds off the highly regarded trio of Rob Finnerty of Burnsville, Andy Richardson of Irondale and Elliott Heath of Winona to defend his state championship in the 1,600 meters at the Class AA boys’ state track and field meet. Blankenship finishes in a school record time of 4:09.10 in a race. Also at the state meet, Stillwater’s Michael Harley places seventh after clearing 6-5.
Girls track and field — Competing in her second state meet, Stillwater freshman Skyler Kroschel finishes fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at the girls’ track and field state meet at Hamline University. Joining Kroschel in the state meet are teammates Michelle SanCartier (14th, 800), Carolyn Baird (13th, 3,200), Megan Olson (13th, 100 hurdles and 11th, pole vault), Karissa Pepin (10th, triple jump and 13th, high jump) and McKenzie Jones (9th, pole vault).
Synchronized swimming — Former Stillwater Ponies standout Anna Nelson is chosen to represent the United States on the Junior National synchronized swimming team after placing among the top 10 at the Junior National Team Trials.
