EAGAN — Despite recording just one first-place finish, the Stillwater boys’ track and field team racked up 883.5 points to posted a comfortable victory over second-place East Ridge (756) and the rest of the eight-team field in the True Team Section 2AAA meet on Tuesday, May 9 at Eagan High School. Eagan followed in third place with 666.5 points.

This marks the 26th time the Ponies have qualified for the True Team state meet in the 31-year history of the event.

“It went pretty much like I thought it would,” Ponies coach Scott Christensen said. “We’ve been in the same section for most of the 31 years and we have kind of an idea of what it’s going to take to win it. We put a lineup in that won’t trash the kids out, but gives us a comfortable win. I didn’t double any of my (distance) kids at all and when the other teams are halfway through and running kids out for the third time and I’m putting fresh kids out, we just got stronger as the meet went on.”

Stillwater’s first-place finish came in the 4×400 relay with Lucas Braun, Cole Lebourgeois, Andrew Frenchik and Josh Phelps posting a winning time of 3:31.13.

Josh Phelps finished second in the 200- (23.23) and 400-meter (51.31) races and the Ponies added second-place finishes in the 1,600 (Joe Hesse-Withbroe), Noah Johnson (3,200), 4×100 relay, long jump (Zach Johnson) and pole vault (Alex Vagle).

Charlie Richman added a third-place finish in the 100 meters (11.28) and Lebourgeois was third in the 800 (2:00.25). Zach Johnson finished third in the triple jump (40-1) and the Ponies also placed third in the 4×800 relay.

“I thought Richman had a fabulous meet and Tyler Cullen again had a great meet,” Christensen said. “Zach Johnson also had a good performance.”

The state meet will be held at Stillwater Area High School on Friday, May 19. The Ponies have placed in the top five at True Team state 20 times in their 26 appearances.
