FOREST LAKE — Competing on the course that will host its section meet, the Stillwater girls’ golf team showed more progress on Wednesday, May 3 while finishing second at the Forest Lake Invitational at Tanners Brook Golf Course. The Ponies posted a score of 364 to place second behind host Forest Lake (337) in the 16-team field. Cretin-Derham Hall (368) followed in third place, four shots behind the Ponies.
“It was kind of a section preview with Central, Mahtomedi, Cretin and Roseville and White Bear Lake,” Ponies coach Peter Deeg said. “We’re definitely optimistic.”
Catherine Monty led the Ponies with an 82 and Sydney O’Neal followed with an 96. They are Stillwater’s returning players with the most experience and they have been showing imporovement each time out, the coach suggested.
“Syd and Catherine are starting to get back into form,” Deeg said. “Catherine played well and Syd played fairly well. With those two playing well, we can compete with Cretin and we have so many kids who can fit into those last four spots.”
Savannah Vincent was next for the Ponies with a 95 and Kalley Taverna completed teh scoring with a 101. Caitlyn Garrity was just one shot behind Taverna with a 102.
“We’re starting to get the last four spots some experience and I think we’ll continue to get better,” Deeg said.

Ponies ninth at Bunker Hills
At Woodbury, Catherine Monty and Sydney O’Neal set the pace for the Ponies as they played ninth at the Girls Preview Invitational on April 28-29 at Bunker Hills Golf Club.
The Ponies improved by eight shots in the second round on the way to a two-day total of 762 (385-377). Top-ranked Edina posted an impressive score of 614 (303-311) to outdistance runner-up Forest Lake (344-350—694) by 80 shots.
Monty led the Ponies on both days, following up an opening-round 89 with an 87 for a total of 176. O’Neal matched Monty’s 89 on Day 1 and followed with an 88 to finish one shot back at 177.
“It was tough weather conditions, but Syd and Catherine both had two rounds in the 80s, which was good,” Ponies coach Peter Deeg said.
Ellie Rice (105-98) improved by seven shots on Day to finish at 203 for the Ponies and Grace Gabriel (105-104) was steady while finishing at 209. Savannah Vincent provided Stillwater’s third score on Day 1 and finished at 211 (102-109).

Stillwater JV places 11th
At Woodbury, sophomore Caitlyn Garrity shot a 97 to lead the Ponies to a 11th-place finish at the Woodbury Invitational on Friday, April 28 at Eagle Valley Golf Club. Stillwater’s lineup included JV players competing against mostly varsity teams. Lake City turned in a score of 340 to outdistance runner-up Woodbury (349) by nine shots. Stillwater finished with a score of 402.
Seventh-grader Caroline Monty was next for the Ponies with a 99 and freshman Anna Lindeberg finished at 100. Eighth-grader Sam Kane completed the scoring with a 106.
