10 years ago this week….

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Boys basketball — Despite losing to Mounds View twice in the regular season, the Stillwater boys’ basketball team shoots 70 percent (21 of 30) from two-point range in a 71-57 victory over the Mustangs in the Section 4AAAA semifinals. Aaron Anderson and Joel Armstrong each deliver 22 points to lead the Ponies (19-9).

Colleges — After placing 10th in the one-mile race at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Stillwater graduate Jake Watson earns All-American honors for Notre Dame. The achievement is significant because Jake and older brother Luke Watson become the first siblings in the 117-year history of the school’s program to be recognized as All-Americans.

Track and field — Former Stillwater standouts Sean Graham (3rd) and Luke Watson (5th) each finish in the top five of the 3,000-meters at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Nordic skiing — Stillwater freshman Jessie Diggins captures gold medals in the 1.3-kilometer sprints and the 5-kilometer freestyle race at the U.S. Junior Olympic Cross Country Ski Championships at Soldier Hollow in Utah. Diggins, who is chosen the Most Valuable Female Skier for the Midwest Team, also places seventh in the 5-kilometer classic race and joins Midwest teammates Libby Ellis and Lynn Duijndam to place second in the 3×3-kilometer classic relay.
