Candidate forums announced

With the Nov. 4 elections approaching, The Gazette is announces it will sponsor eight candidate forums in October.

The newspaper will sponsor forums for the cities of Bayport, Lake Elmo, Oak Park Heights and Stillwater. It will also sponsor forums for the Stillwater Area School Board, Minnesota House District 39A, Minnesota House District 39B and the Fourth Congressional District. All but one candidate confirmed attendance at the appropriate forum.

As in years past, Marguerite Rheinberger will moderate most of the forums, with the exception of the Stillwater council/mayor forum, due to a conflict of interest. Attorney Tracey Galowitz will moderate the Stillwater mayor/council forum.

This year’s forums were organized by Beth Johnson, who will also serve as timekeeper.

Questions will be written by Gazette staff.

The first forum is Tuesday, Oct. 7. Following are the details for each forum.

Bayport

A Bayport City Council forum will be 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Bayport City Hall, 294 Third St. N. Valley Access Channels will record and replay the forum on later dates.

Three candidates are vying for two open council seats. All three have confirmed they will attend. The candidates are Brian DeLisle, Michele Hanson and Patrick McGann.

Lake Elmo

A Lake Elmo City Council forum will be 7-8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Lake Elmo City Hall, 3800 Laverne Ave. N. The Ramsey/Washington Counties Cable Commission will record and replay the forum, and share a copy of it with Valley Access Channels.

Four candidates are vying for two positions. All four have confirmed they will attend. The candidates are Julie Fliflet, Jill Lundgren, Wally Nelson and Mike Reeves.

Oak Park Heights

An Oak Park Heights City Council forum will be 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Oak Park Heights City Hall, 14168 Oak Park Blvd. N. Valley Access Channels will broadcast it live, as well as replay it later.

Three candidates are vying for two positions open council seats. All three have confirmed they will attend. The candidates are David Beaudet, Mike Liljegren and Mark Swenson.

Stillwater

A Stillwater City Council and mayoral forum will be 7-8:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Stillwater City Hall, 216 Fourth St. N. Valley Access Channels will broadcast it live, as well as replay it later.

Ted Kozlowski and John Rheinberger are running for mayor. Ryan Collins and Doug Menikheim are running for council in Ward 1. All four have confirmed they will attend.

Stillwater Area Schools

A District 834 School Board candidate forum will be 8:15-9:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Stillwater City Hall, 216 Fourth St. N. The school board forum will follow the Fourth Congressional District forum, held the same evening. Valley Access Channels will broadcast the school board forum live, as well as replay it later.

Eight candidates are vying for four seats. The candidates are Fred Anderson, George Hoeppner, Don Hovland, Tom Lehmann, Paul “Woody” Leindecker, Paula O’Loughlin, Shelley Pearson and Aly Xiong. Seven of the candidates have confirmed they will attend. Hovland declined the invitation, citing a 10-day out-of-state obligation.

State House

State House forums will be Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Oak Park Heights City Hall, 14168 Oak Park Blvd. N. Valley Access Channels will record and replay these forums on later dates.

• House District 39A — Forum is 7-7:45 p.m. Both candidates, Bob Dettmer, R, and Tim Stender, DFL, have confirmed they will attend.

• House District 39B — Forum is 8-8:45 p.m. Both candidates, Tom DeGree, DFL, and Kathy Lohmer, R, have confirmed they will attend.

4th Congressional District

A Fourth Congressional District candidate forum will be 7-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Stillwater City Hall, 216 Fourth St. N. Valley Access Channels will broadcast it live, as well as replay it later.

Three candidates are running to represent the Fourth District in the U.S. House. All three have confirmed attendance. Candidates are Betty McCollum, DFL; Dave Thomas, I; and Sharna Wahlgren, R.
