Legion baseball: Maplewood Green eliminates Post #48

The Stillwater Legion baseball team’s season ended on Saturday, July 26 with an all-too familiar one-run setback in the losers bracket of the Division I Sub-State #8 Tournament at White Bear Lake.

After falling to Lino Lakes 12-2 in the tourney opener, Post #48 battled back with victories over Tri-City Blue and White Bear Lake to join a list of just four teams remaining for play on Saturday.

Stillwater pounded out 16 hits in the 15-8 victory over Tri-City Blue, with Trevor Dudar, Matthew Flock and Brooks Carroll driving in three runs apiece. In the team’s 9-1 victory over White Bear Lake, Stillwater’s first four batters (Ethan Stanley, Nick Novak, Dudar and Cory Albertson knocked two hits each.

Stillwater opened up a 5-3 lead until Maplewood Green rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to escape with a 6-5 victory in an elimination game.

More than half of Stillwater’s games this season were decided by two runs or less and the loss to Maplewood Green left Post #48 with a 2-8 record in one-run games.

Unlike many of the teams it was competing against, including some with younger college players, Stillwater (14-17) featured a young roster that included just five players from the recent 2014 graduating class. Eleven of its players are entering their senior year of high school and two will not graduate until 2016.
