The Stillwater Lift Bridge will close at 10 a.m. today due to high water levels. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the bridge, which connects Minnesota Highway 36 and Wisconsin Highway 64, will remain closed until further notice.
Motorists are directed to use Interstate 94 or Highway 243 as detour routes.
According to MnDOT, when a road is closed, it is illegal to travel in that area, and drivers can be fined up to $1,000 or get 90 days in jail. If travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties apply.
According to the National Weather Service, the St. Croix River at Stillwater was measured at 85.97 feet around 9 a.m. June 23. It is forecasted to crest at 87.2 feet late Friday.
