Ballroom dancing

Ballroom dance parties with a DJ will be offered on the third Saturday of every month from 7-10 p.m. in the dance studio of The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Tom Larson will offer a dance lesson during the first hour. The tango and Lindy hop will be featured on June 21, and the nightclub two-step and samba will be taught on July 19. This is an opportunity to have fun trying out new dance skills in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Admission is $12 per person.

Larson has taught at The Phipps since 2003 and owns the Ballroom and Wedding Dance Studio in Minneapolis. He performed for five seasons with The Continental Ballet Company.

Dance company auditions

Auditions for The Phipps Dance Company 2014-15 season will be held on Wednesday, June 25 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the dance studio of The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin. Registration begins at 5 p.m.

Christina Leines will direct this performing group along with associate director Stephanie Campbell. The company will produce a spring concert March 20 and 21, 2015, at the center and perform in the community throughout the year. Auditions for this youth performing ensemble are open to students age 13 to 18, with a minimum of two years of dance training from any school. No preparation is necessary. Dancers should bring shoes for all styles of dance in which they are trained, including ballet, tap, jazz and pointe. Company members do not need experience in all of these styles. All should come dressed to dance.

Requirements for company members are a one-year commitment, which includes taking two Phipps dance technique classes per week along with rehearsals twice weekly on either Mondays or Thursdays (day and time yet to be determined) and Fridays from 4:15 – 6:15 p.m. beginning September 11. Any scheduling conflicts should be discussed and approved by the directors before auditions. The cost is $159 for each of four eight-week sessions in addition to a $50 costume fee and dance class fees.

Fiber Art classes

Several fiber art classes for ages 6 through 16 will be offered during Summer Art Camp, June 16 through August 15, at The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Wonders of Weaving, during which students ages 7 to 16 will weave a placemat, belt, bookmark and more will be held on Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a fee of $99.

Weave a Bag or Purse, also for students ages 7 to 16, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, June 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a fee of $99. Students are asked to bring in 3 yards of prewashed cotton fabric which they will learn to weave into a purse or tote bag on a rigid heddle loom.

Stitching in Artwork is offered on Monday through Friday, July 21 – 25, from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 6 to 10, and from 1-3 p.m. for ages 11 to 13, for a fee of $109. In this class, students will incorporate the traditional skill of hand-sewing to create art.

Several one-day classes working with fiber are also offered throughout the summer. Bleach Design a T-shirt and Pillowcase, for ages 8 to 10, will be held on Friday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon for a fee of $24. Bleach Design a T-shirt and More, for ages 11 and older, will be held on Wednesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to noon for a fee of $24. Instant Color Set Dyeing on Silk Scarves will be held on Friday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 6 to 9, and from 1-3 p.m. for ages 9 to 12, for a fee of $44. Experiment with Wet Felting is offered Friday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 6 to 9, and from 1-3 p.m. for ages 9 to 12, for a fee of $34.

Minnesota Orchestra

The Phipps Center for the Arts proudly announces the 26th annual free outdoor concert by the Minnesota Orchestra on Monday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson’s Lakefront Park band shell.

Selections will include “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Armed Forces Salute,” John Philip Sousa’s “El Capitan,” John Williams’s Theme from “Jurassic Park,” Hector Berlioz’s “Le Corsaire (The Pirate),” Dmitri Kabalevsky’s Overture to “Colas Breugnon,” Opus 24, Johann Strauss, Jr.’s “Emperor” Waltz, Opus 437, and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “1812,” Overture, Opus 49. The Lakefront Park band shell is located west of The Phipps Center at the corner of First and Locust Streets. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Comedy class

A stand-up comedy class will be offered by Scott Novotny on Monday and Tuesday, July 7 and 8, as well as Monday and Wednesday, July 14 and 16, from 7-8:30 p.m., culminating in a special showcase on Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. at The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin.

A step-by-step approach will enable participants to develop a three to seven-minute routine that will be performed in the Black Box Theater at the end of the class on a special showcase night.

A professional comedian for over 30 years, Novotny brings his vast array of talents to this class. Besides numerous national television appearances, Novotny is also a former company member at Dudley Riggs’ Brave New Workshop, appeared at the Minnesota State Fair and The Corn Palace, is an award-winning writer, and was the founder and artistic director of The Comedy Cabaret, the first comedy club in Minnesota.

‘The Wizard of Oz’

“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed by The Phipps Children’s Theater July 18 – August 3.

Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s enduring children’s story, this production uses the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1987 script, inspired by and featuring the songs from the famous MGM musical.

The cast features 41 talented young people ages 10 – 22. Directors John and Keith Nickolaus-Johnson, music director Sheila Pelzel, and choreographer Christina Leines have each previously staged a variety of shows for The Phipps Children’s Theater.

“The Wizard of Oz” will run for 12 performances, July 18 – August 3, on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., as well as Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

New art

A series of exhibitions featuring conceptual sculpture by Davie Duke (Minneapolis), works in fiber by Marjorie Fedyszyn (Minneapolis), mixed media sculpture by Sarah Kusa (St. Paul), new collage works by Nathan Stromberg (St. Paul), and drawing, painting, and installation by Lyz Wendland (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) will be on view through July 6 in The Galleries of The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Stromberg is a painter and collage artist who currently teaches at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis.

The artist comments, “The process of making archival images into re-contextualized artworks becomes a means to explore the past and its implications for the present. I am drawn to these images for the multiple ways they communicate across the span of decades. The iconic object is given new life in a new context to comment on the ever-changing American identity.”

Galleries hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday noon to 4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.
