Auditions for the Wizard of Oz May 18-20

There’s no place like the Phipps Center for the Arts this summer as you will be transported to the wonderful Land of Oz!  Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s enduring children’s story, this production uses the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1987 script, inspired by and featuring the songs from the famous MGM musical.  After a tornado sweeps Dorothy from her Kansas home to the magical land of OZ, she starts her quest to find the mighty Wizard of Oz who has the power to send her home. Accompanied by a brainless Scarecrow, a heartless Tin Woodsman and a neurotic Cowardly Lion, she must protect the magical ruby slippers from the Wicked Witch of the West and go on a journey filled with danger and self-discovery.

The show requires a large ensemble of actors playing many featured roles, including the Dorothy Gale, Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Wicked Witch of the West, Wizard of Oz and Glinda along with an ensemble of Winged Monkeys, Munchkins, Apple Trees, Poppies and more.  Specific cast details can be found on the Phipps website.

Actors may schedule an audition on The Phipps website, www.ThePhipps.org, on the following dates and times: ages 14-22 on Sunday, May 18, 1-5 p.m., and ages 10-13 on Monday, May 19, 6-9 p.m. Open auditions will be held Tuesday, May 20 for ages 10-13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and ages 14-22 from 8-9:30 p.m. Out-of-town college students age 22 or younger may submit a video.  See The Phipps website for further information.

Actors will be asked to sing approximately 32 measures of a prepared upbeat song showing their range, as well as read from the script. Those auditioning should bring a copy or the original sheet music for the accompanist. Everyone will be asked to learn a short dance combination, so all should come dressed to move, with their hair tied back. Also, actors should bring an audition form which can be found on the Phipps website, a current photo (any size), as well as a list of all rehearsal conflicts.

Rehearsals will be scheduled from June 2nd through July 17 on weekdays, except Wednesdays, from 6-9 p.m.; and Saturdays, from 1-4 p.m.  The Wizard of Oz will run for 12 performances from July 18 through August 3 on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., as well as Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

Director John & Keith Nickolaus-Johnson, music director Sheila Pelzel and choreographer Christina Leines each have previously worked on a variety of shows for The Phipps Children’s Theater.
