St. Croix Valley residents turned out to celebrate a successful year on the trails for Afton native and Stillwater Area High School graduate Jessie Diggins on Wednesday night at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve Nordic Center. Diggins, won captured a world championship in 2013, recently participated in her first Winter Olympic Games. In addition to signing autographs and taking photos with fans, Diggins shared stories and experiences from what was another successful season. One of her sponsors, Podiumwear, also provided numerous door prizes that were distributed. Diggins highlighted many of the high and low points of the season with a slideshow and also thanks everyone for their encouragement and loyal support. She discussed the opening ceremonies and competing at the Olympics and a recent visit to Washington D.C. and an brief, but interesting visit with Barack and Michelle Obama. The City of Stillwater and Washington County each paid tribute to Diggins by recognizing April 30 as “Jessie Diggins Day” and Ponies coach Kris Hansen displayed the uniform once worn by Diggins that will be retired permanently to the renowned wax shed of long-time Ponies assistant coach Bob Hagstrom.
